Noises Off
By Michael Frayn
Design Concept
Noises Off is the classic 20th century farce written by Michael Frayn about a company of misfit actors and crew trying to hold together a show hanging by a thread. This design served as my graduate thesis where I explored area miking to subtly support the actors and the chaos unfolding on stage utilizing Timax PanLab Console to spatialize the microphones. I also composed the music, inspired by classic british comedies like "Carry On" and "Terry and June"
Measure for Measure
By William Shakspeare
Design Concept
Measure for Measure by William Shakespeare is one of the bard's most scandalous morality plays. Dealing with themes of manipulation, power, and the power of one's reputation. The production was heavily inspired by european nightlife and rave culture, interwoven with themes of religion and purity. This was accomplished through transition music ranging from german electronic producer Gessafelstein to electro-infused orchestral pieces by Apashe. Produced at Columbia University.
La Belle et la Bete
By Annie Louie
Design Concept
La Belle et la Bete is a devised adaptation of the classic fairy tale by Gabrielle Suzanne Villeneuve, drawing parallel to the author's real life struggles as a young female playwright in 1700s France. This design was created in collaboration with composer Michael Hooker. Fusing rich fantastical instrumentations with magical sound effects moving the audincec between the mystical world of Belle and the cold, contemporary world of Gabrielle. This production was a fantastic process in learning how to be adaptable as a designer to the always-evolving style of direction that comes from devised work.
Gloria
By Branden Jacobs-Jenkins
Design Concept
Gloria is the story about a magazine office that experiences a shooting and how the survivors of the shooting are affected in the months following and who has the right to tell the story. I wanted the design to feel subtle, with lots of office ambience to lure the audience into a false sense of security so by the time the violence takes place on stage it shocks the audience and I wanted to the sound design to dictate that.
Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
Adapted by Dwayne Hartford
from the book by Kate DiCamillo
Design Concept
The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane is an adaptation of the original children's book, developed for young audiences. This production served as my first design at South Coast Repertory Theater. The design was influenced by the journey of the inanimate yet personified Edward Tulane as he travels from owner to owner through a series of events showing the true meaning of family. From being dumped into the bottom of the ocean to hopping train cars, my design supported his journey as he crossed the country on his way to find his true home.
The Moors
By Jenn Silverman
Design Concept
The Moors by Jenn Silverman is a peculiar tale of a governess who arrives at a mysterious house where every room looks exactly the same, and the child she's told to watch after, doesn't seem to exist. In a strange mix of Wuthering Heights meets the Addams Family, The Moors is a beautifully melancholic play with a dark comedic edge. The design was heavily influenced by the descent into madness that all characters fall into on the titular dark and bleak english moors. This production unfortunately only received two performances before being closed for the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic.
Everybody
By Branden Jacobs-Jenkins
Design Concept
Everbody by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins is a modern retelling of "Everyman", one of the original morality plays. The big twist being that each character can be portrayed by a different actor through a nightly lottery, deciding which actors played which characters. This design was an excercise in creating a design that could adapt to each character/actor and how they're respective journeys changed between each show. This production was done over zoom during the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic at the University of Idaho in the Spring of 2021.
